Michael Novakhov – 6:16 AM 8/8/2018

P.S.: What is the difference between the political “conspiracy theory” and the valid investigative hypothesis?

A number of criteria, and among them: internal, “construct” consistency and validity, its “internal logic’. Investigative hypothesis is valid in the same way any other cognitive, including the scientific, hypothesis is valid. The various hypotheses compete with each other for the “validation” and acceptance as the legitimate new paradigms, just like the branches of the tree compete with each other for the supplies of nutrients from its roots in their quest for the growth and development.

This concept was addressed in “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” By Thomas S. Kuhn and in “Conjectures and Refutations” By Karl Popper

All valid investigative hypotheses must be investigated to the fullest.

The “German Hypothesis” is the valid investigative hypothesis, in my humble opinion. If someone thinks otherwise, please come forward and prove your point.

As the valid investigative hypothesis, the “German Hypothesis”, as I call it, naming the main and the leading player, should be investigated to the fullest and to the utmost depth.

Not investigating it would be the investigatory negligence, it seems to me.

Mr. Mueller, please investigate the “German Hypothesis” of the Operations “Trump” and “9/11” in depth and in details; and if you do not investigate it, please explain to the people, why you do not investigate it.

Donald Trump goes berserk after three hundred newspapers condemn him

President Donald J. Trump appears to be developing his USSR persona every day, learning from his master, former KGB agent Vladimir Putin. In a tweet on Thursday morning, he wrote: “THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA IS THE OPPOSITION PARTY. It is very bad for our Great Country….BUT WE ARE WINNING!”

This apparently was triggered by the 350 newspapers who wrote editorials which pushed back against Trump’s statement that the media was the “enemy of the people.” The thinnest-skinned president in our nation’s history did what he does when anything negative is said about him – he acts out like a spoiled five-year-old.

The rhetoric, much like his pulling of John Brennan’s security clearance, is a dangerous precedent. Like a dictatorial power, Trump appears to be intent on silencing his critics and anyone who does not blindly buy into his lies. His latest tweet is an attempt to marginalize the press and continue his drumbeat that the press is “fake news” and that it is not to be trusted.

But we must see through this and not allow him to prevail. Bravo to the liberal, neutral and conservative editorial boards across this great nation, from Alaska to Hawaii to every point east and west and north and south in our nation. As the Boston Globe editorial board wrote, “Journalists are not classified as fellow Americans, but rather ‘The enemy of the people.’ This relentless assault on the free press has dangerous consequences.”

Donald Trump lashed out at the Boston Globe in another tweet: “The Boston Globe, which was sold to the the Failing New York Times for 1.3 BILLION DOLLARS (plus 800 million dollars in losses & investment), or 2.1 BILLION DOLLARS, was then sold by the Times for 1 DOLLAR. Now the Globe is in COLLUSION with other papers on free press. PROVE IT!” Trump at his best – trying to distract and project. He is the opposition party, aligning with his hero, Putin, in seeking to silence the media, and somehow dreaming up a case of “collusion with other papers.” The Emptyeror as always has no clothes.

‘What the hell?’ Banksy disavows Moscow exhibition of his work | Art and design

mikenova shared this story from The Guardian.

The street artist Banksy has disavowed any support for a popular exhibition of his work in Moscow, saying he would never charge people to see his art.

Moscow’s most controversial exhibition this summer has been an exhibition of Banksy’s graffiti works, including an original canvas of his Mona Lisa and 25 other original works that organiser Alexander Nachkebiya had called “one of a kind”.

Billed by Moscow’s Central House of Artists as the city’s art event of the year, it has attracted 200,000 visitors in its first two months, according to Russian media reports. But it appears the entire thing took place without the artist’s knowledge.

In a screengrab of an online chat posted by the artist on Wednesday, Banksy responded to a photograph of Moscow’s exhibition hall by saying: “What the hell is that?”

Told it was an exhibition of his work and it cost £20 to get in – it actually costs closer to £10 – the artist was not amused. “I wish I could find it funny,” Banksy wrote in the online conversation with an unnamed person. “What’s the opposite of LOL?”

The exhibition has the sponsorship of a number of Russia’s biggest companies, including the mobile provider MTS. The antivirus company Kaspersky was a partner for the exhibition, and a number of Russia’s most prominent news agencies were informational partners.

“You know it’s got nothing to do with me right? I don’t charge people to see my art unless there’s a fairground wheel,” Banksy wrote in the online chat. The artist is reclusive and is not represented on a number of social media sites. A representative did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The organiser of the exhibition previously said publicly that Banksy was not involved. In an interview in June with a Russian state television broadcaster, Nachkebiya, listed online as the CEO of the IQ Art Management Corporation, said he had not spoken with Banksy or his representatives before the exhibition.

“Banksy is always against exhibitions that he doesn’t organise himself,” the businessman said. “As to Banksy I can say that he still works on the street, he still is a rebel, he still does very relevant, very urgent work. So I think it’s not that important to him.”

The exhibition is the first time Banksy’s work has been shown in Russia. VIP tickets allow viewers to skip the line and join guided tours of the work.

Urged to put out a press release disavowing the exhibition, the artist did see some irony in going public, saying: “Hmm – not sure I’m the best person to complain about people putting up pictures without getting permission.”

Westminster crash: Salih Khater named as suspect

mikenova shared this story from BBC News – Home.

The man arrested on suspicion of terror offences after a car crashed outside the Houses of Parliament has been named as Salih Khater by government sources.

The 29-year-old British citizen, originally from Sudan, has also been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, Met Police said on Wednesday.

He came to the UK as a refugee and was granted asylum, the BBC understands.

His brother described him as a “normal person” with no fanatical ideas, and no links to any religious group.

Abdullah Khater also said his family – who are originally from Darfur in Sudan – was in “a state of shock” over the incident.

Three people were injured after the car hit cyclists and pedestrians during Tuesday morning’s rush hour.

The silver Ford Fiesta then crashed into security barriers outside the Houses of Parliament just before 07:40 BST.

Horizon Q400: Be level, there are 400 Questions.
Ketron Island: This is the key throne. Kedr is on.

M.N.: No, I meant exactly the “Pu-get Sound“: The Demiurge or The Pretender  says: “It sounds like you want to get Putin. Doesn’t it?”

I am not out to “get” anyone. I just want it to sound like the Truth and to be the Truth, believe it or not. It is not the badge of honor or pride, it is an obsession. Some people are like that. It is like a character trait.

Although, this is very logical line of reasoning: if Putin is the German Agent (which without any doubts he is), and if he served you, The Demiurge, as your puppet, and he tried to cover it up for you by claiming your plans, designs, and actions as his own, by pretending to be a Demiurge, and mixing them skillfully with his own, and the others, according to your new Genius Software Spying and Special Operations programs worldwide, and if it eventually served the “Deutschland Uber Alles” purposes, the Russian people will send him to Magadan, right away and without further delay, as the Greatest VRIO of All Times, to dig for the real gold and to write his vrio memories.

Dolphins put on show for Puget Sound boaters

<a href=”http://KING5.com” rel=”nofollow”>KING5.com</a>Aug 10, 2018
A couple exploring the Puget Sound waters were surprised when some unexpected visitors joined them — three common dolphins.
Horizon employee had security clearance, no flight experience

mikenova shared this story from Comments on: Horizon employee had security clearance, no flight experience.

Multiple investigations have been spurred after Horizon Air employee Richard “Beebo” Russell stole an airplane from Sea-Tac Airport Friday night, flew it to south Puget Sound and crashed it. Authorities say that it was not an act of terrorism; the 29-year-old man was reportedly suicidal.

“He was a faithful husband, a loving son, and a good friend,” his family said in a statement on Saturday night. “This is a complete shock to us. We are devastated by these events.”

“As the voice recordings show, Beebo’s intent was not to harm anyone. He was right in saying that there were so many people who loved him. We would like to thank the authorities who have been helpful and respectful, Alaska Air for their resources, the community, his friends and family for their incredible support and compassion, and Jesus, whose steadfast love endures.”

The FBI’s Seattle office has taken over the investigation into the incident and Russell, who worked for Horizon for 3.5 years.

“I have dozens of personnel out at the crash site right now; I had 30-40 folks out overnight interviewing co-workers and family members,” said Special Agent Jay Tabb. “This is going to take a little bit of time.”

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office says that the man — who worked as a ground service agent for Horizon — acted alone when he took the empty airplane from Sea-Tac Airport at around 8 p.m., flew it, and crashed it on Ketron Island Friday evening.

It is believed that he had no flying experience, but was somehow able to take a Horizon Air Q400, turboprop airplane and take off from Sea-Tac. The airport’s control tower was in contact with the man as he flew over Puget Sound, attempting to get him to land the plane. But recorded conversations imply that he had no intention of landing safely when he took it. The plane flew south along the coast, doing maneuvers, and was followed by two F-15 jets which attempted to escort the stolen aircraft back to Sea-Tac. The jets were scrambled out of the Portland area and created a sonic boom en route to the stolen airplane. They reached the Horizon craft within minutes of the theft. The jets followed until the crash. They did not shoot it down.

All flights were temporarily grounded at Sea-Tac Airport for a “security breach” Friday night. A ground stop was ordered through 11 p.m., according to FAA. Horizon Air released this video statementimmediately following the incident.

Brad Tildon, CEO of Alaska Airline, which operates Horizon, said Saturday that the incident is going to cause some changes at the company.

“Last night’s event is going to push us to learn what we can assure that this doesn’t happen again at Alaska Air Group or any other airline,” he said.

Richard “Beebo” Russell

The Seattle Times has identified the Horizon employee as Richard Russell of Sumner, a quiet man who was well liked by coworkers. He was married, religious, and went by the nickname of “Beebo.”

Russell had a blog as part of a college communications course where he states he was born in Key West, Florida and moved to Wasilla, Alaska when he was seven. He met his wife in Oregon in 2010; their wedding was in 2012. The couple ran a bakery on the Oregon Coast before moving to Sumner. The Bakery was featured in an article in Coos Bay’s The World newspaper.

The blog, last updated in 2017, features photos from his travels and a video about his work as a baggage handler at Sea-Tac. It also includes audio clips of interviews with fellow ground service agents, or merely just sounds of aircraft. He states that he went to work for Horizon because it allowed him to fly to Alaska and visit family.

Gary Beck, CEO of Horizon Air said questions remain as to how Russell was able to fly the plane from Sea-Tac in the first place. A Horizon twin propeller aircraft, such as the one that was stolen, is a turboprop airplane used for short trips in the Northwest, such as from Seattle to Spokane or Oregon. It seats about 76 passengers, and cruises at 414 mph. It is nearly 108 feet long with a 93 foot wingspan.

“Commercial aircraft are complex machines, they are not as easy to fly as say a Cessna 150,” Beck said. “So I don’t know how he achieved the experience that he did.”

Tildon also provided more details about Russell, and said he was vetted for security. Russell worked as a ground service agent, which does everything from de-ice airplanes to handling baggage and guiding planes on the runway. He worked for the company since February 2015. The Times reports that Russell worked on a tow team, which moves planes in and out of the runway. A tow team has two members — one that drives a tow truck, and another in the cockpit of the airplane who communicates with the tower. That person can operate the plane’s brakes.

“There was a couple different criminal background checks we run on our employees, he had a CETA badge with the Port of Seattle, so that’s another,” Tildon said. “He worked his shift yesterday, we believe he was in uniform. His job is to be around airplanes. He was tow certified. Airports have a non-secure side and a secure side; he’s meant to be on the secure side. That’s part of the fulfillment of his job responsibilities.”

Conversation with the air traffic control tower

Audio recordings from the air traffic control tower at Sea-Tac feature the conversation between the tower and the man in the airplane, referred to as “Rich.” Pilots in the tower attempted to instruct the man how to operate the airplane and use the instruments in the cockpit.

“Alright Rich, congratulations, you did that,” an air traffic controller can be heard on the recording. “Now let’s turn and land that airplane safely and not hurt anybody on the ground”

“Alright,” the man in the airplane responds. “Ah damn it, I don’t know, man. I don’t know! I don’t want to. I was hoping that was going to be it, ya know.”

“I just kind of want to do a couple maneuvers and see what it can do, before I put her down, ya know,” he says.

The man later said he felt light headed and dizzy and that he threw up a little bit. He apologized for the trouble and hoped it didn’t ruin the controller’s day. He also said that he didn’t have enough fuel. He mentions that he didn’t know how to “land it” and that he didn’t initially plan to. He does say that flying the plane was “a blast” and that he played video games before, so he had an idea of how to fly it.

“I got a lot of people that care about me,” he said on the recording. “And, uh, it’s going to disappoint them to hear that I did this. I would like to apologize to each and every one of them. Just a broken guy. Got a few screws loose, I guess. Never really knew it until now.”

At other portions of the recording the man notes he can see the Olympic Mountains and comments on how beautiful they are. The air traffic controller asks him to turn the plane around because if he goes too far, he won’t be able to keep talking with him. The man in the airplane then asks, “Hey pilot guy, can this thing do, uh, back flip thing?”

“I think I’m going to land it,” he says later. “Like, uh, in a safe kind of manner. I think I’m going to try to do a barrel roll and if that goes good, I’m just going to go nose down and call it a night.”

The man frequently said he wanted to do a barrel roll and the tower encouraged him to make a turn instead.

KIRO 7’s Gary Horcher spoke with Sea-Tac employees who described Rich as “super normal” and nice. They said he didn’t show any signs he would steal an airplane like this.

Fire on Ketron Island

The plane crash caused a massive fire on Ketron Island. Jet fuel combined with excessively dry conditions this season caused the flames to spread quickly.

Fire crews boarded a ferry in Steilacoom shortly after the crash and sailed to the island. The fire was contained shortly after midnight.

Ketron Island, just off the shores of Steilacoom, has few residents. Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor estimated that about 12 people live on the island. He said the plane crashed in a wooded area and not near any homes.

Witnesses

Witnesses on the shoreline saw the airplane chase before the crash. Some report that the plane made a hard turn before crashing to the ground.

“It banked in towards the land a little bit, then out over toward the island,  and then it just went down on the far side of the island and a really large cloud of smoke came up,” a woman told KIRO 7. “Shortly after that, we heard the bang from it.”

Witness Randy Foley told KIRO Radio has lived near Joint Base Lewis-McChord for nearly 50 years.

“We’re like, ‘Something is not right here,’” Foley said. “I mean, this is two F-15s escorting a commercial flight and we are like, ‘Something doesn’t seem right here.’ Of course, you always hope for the best. Then about 30 seconds later, we saw the big plume of black smoke. Something just happened.”

“It was really outside anything I’ve ever seen before,” he added.

Sharon Hawes heard a boom, but initially thought it was activity at JBLM.

“So we were sitting in the lounge chairs, watching the sunset, then we saw the plane, and the jets behind it, and my first thought was it was something at McChord, so late at night,” Hawes said. “Then we heard a third jet. Then the sunset was done, we went up to the house, they were putting things away at the pool and that’s when they heard the boom. Then my husband put it all together and turned on the news, and said ‘That was the plane.’”

“It was low enough that we could see the Alaska name, and the Alaska, ya know, face,” another witness told KIRO 7. “It was flying really low and banking really sharp, which is really unusual for a plane to be doing, and then being followed by the two jets.”

Why didn’t the FBI warn Trump like they warned Feinstein?

mikenova shared this story .

In order to get Lindsey Graham’s point in this discussion with Harris Faulkner, first you’d have to know about the spy on Dianne Feinstein’s staff. Thanks to the collective silence of most media outlets, the audience for this argument might be somewhat limited — but that doesn’t make it any less powerful. Graham wants to know why the FBI warned Dianne Feinstein about a suspected spy but never bothered to tell Donald Trump about their suspicions over Carter Page and George Papadopoulos.

“Great point,” responded The Right Scoop (starts ~2:40):

I’m gonna send a letter to Director Wray next week and ask him what is the policy? Why didn’t you tell president Trump that you had concerns about Carter Page? Is there a double standard here?

If this was a counter-intelligence investigation and not a criminal investigation, the FBI should have told President Trump they had concerns about Papadopoulos and Page. Why didn’t they do for Trump what they did for Feinstein?

Let’s not forget that the penetration in Feinstein’s case was much more significant, too. The warning from the FBI came after the man had been in Feinstein’s employ for “two decades,” as the local CBS affiliate noted last week. The FBI had evidence of direct and covert contact between the suspect and China’s intelligence operatives. Feinstein was also a high-value target as chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, with access to the most sensitive information held by the US government, including from our intelligence partners around the globe. And yet, the FBI reached out to Feinstein rather than open a counter-intelligence probe with her as a potential target, even though Feinstein’s family has profited extensively through contacts with China during her tenure.

In contrast, Donald Trump was a businessman running for president with three questionable advisers. Graham doesn’t see why the FBI didn’t prioritize hygiene over investigation in that case as they did with Feinstein:

Why do you tell a Democrat when they hire somebody connected to China – it could happen to anybody’s office. When the FBI finds out that somebody’s working for us that may have connections to a foreign government, they should tell us…

When it comes to the Trump campaign, why didn’t they tell him about Papadopoulos and Cater Page? And at the end of the day, what has Carter Page done wrong? He’s still walking around a free man.

Here’s the point. A counter-intelligence investigation is designed to protect American institutions from infiltration. The right thing for the FBI to do is if they find somebody working for a political campaign, a bank, or any part of the government, is to inform the people in charge that this person you hired has got unsavory connections. That’s what they did for Feinstein. Why did they not do that when it came to Manafort, Gates and Papadopoulos?

That’s a very good question … if we know for sure that the FBI didn’t give a specific warning to Trump about those three men. Are we positive about that? The FBI has said that they gave a standard security briefing to both the Trump and Hillary Clinton campaigns after they locked up their respective nominations. The campaigns are responsible for properly vetting their staff and their advisers, after all, especially after getting even a generic counterintelligence briefing by the FBI about the need to do so.

If the FBI didn’t follow up when specific suspicions were raised about Carter Page, however, Graham’s got at least a good point about the differences between their treatment of Feinstein and Trump. Too bad readers of the New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times won’t know what Graham’s talking about.

Update: I wrote “Congress” where I meant “president.” Thanks to the Monster for the heads-up on my error.

How the financial crisis led to the West’s confrontation with Putin

mikenova shared this story .

NEW YORK (Project Syndicate) – Ten years ago this week, Russian tanks halted a few hours’ march short of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. That short war in the Caucasus brought down the curtain on nearly two decades of post-Cold War Western hegemony in Europe.

Encouraged by President George W. Bush’s administration, Georgia had initiated North Atlantic Treaty Organization membership talks, impelling Russian President Vladimir Putin to defend the red line he had drawn the previous year. Russia, Putin announced at the Munich Security Conference in February 2007, would regard any further eastward expansion of Western institutions as an act of aggression.

In August 2008, European diplomats scrambled to stop the fighting. Within weeks, however, the onset of the global financial crisis captured the world’s attention. In Washington, London, Paris, Berlin, and Moscow, preventing bank failures, not military escalation, was the most pressing problem.

At first glance, the Georgian war and the global financial crisis seem unrelated. But this is to neglect the deeper currents driving the confrontation.

The absorption of post-communist Europe into the West was not simply a matter of velvet revolutions. What Bush’s defense secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, called “new Europe” — the post-communist NATO allies and European Union members — depended on hundreds of billions of dollars in investment. The loans came from the same European banks that helped fuel the U.S. real-estate boom and inflate the even bigger housing bubbles in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Spain.

The most extreme real-estate inflation in the world between 2005 and 2007 was on NATO’s Eastern frontier in the Baltics.

Along with a security guarantee against Russia, the post-communist countries craved prosperity. By the early 2000s, former Soviet republics like Georgia and Ukraine, which had not gained admission to either NATO or the EU, feared being left behind. Their desire to “catch up” prompted the so-called color revolutions of 2003 and 2004, reflecting their belief that economic growth, democratization, and a pro-Western orientation went hand in hand.

But it was not only the Soviet Union’s former satellites that benefited from the debt-fueled global boom. The authority and power of Putin’s regime, too, was (largely) a function of globalization — specifically, the huge surge in oil prices. In 2008, it seemed that Russia’s state-controlled energy giant GazpromGAZ, +0.80%  , benefiting from unprecedented growth in emerging-markets demand, led by China, might soon become the world’s largest corporation.

In 2008, two pressure fronts of global capitalism were rushing toward each other across Eurasia. While Western investment drove economic growth in Central and Eastern Europe, the commodity boom sustained Russia’s geopolitical revival. Of course, these trends need not have led to a clash. According to the mantra of globalization, at least, trade benefits all sides.

Saudi Rappers Fight for the Right to Party

The EU insists on the innocence of its model of integration. The goal is peace, stability, and the rule of law, not geopolitical advantage, its senior representatives guilelessly maintain.

Whether or not they truly believe it, the EU’s new post-communist members saw it differently. For them, NATO and EU membership were part of an anti-Russian package, just as they had been for West European countries in the 1950s.

Whenever Germany pushed détente with Russia too far, tensions flared. In response to the agreement in 2005 to construct the Nord Stream gas pipeline, Poland’s then-foreign minister, Radek Sikorski, denounced it as a new version of the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

Although Ukraine, too, applied for NATO membership in 2008, it did not provoke Russian intervention. But the war in Georgia split the Ukrainian political class three ways, between those who favored alignment with the West, those who favored Russia, and those who preferred a policy of balance. These tensions were further exacerbated by the impact of the financial crisis.

No part of the world economy was hit harder by that crisis than the former Soviet sphere. When global lending imploded, the most fragile borrowers were cut off first. Followed closely by a collapse in commodity prices, it dealt a devastating shock to the “transition economies.”

As one of the world’s largest oil and gas exporters, Russia was one of the worst affected. But after the humiliation of the financial crises of the late 1990s, Putin had seen to it that Russia was armed with substantial dollar reserves — the third largest after China and Japan. Reserves of $600 billion enabled Russia to ride out the storm of 2008 without external help.

The same was not true of its former satellites. Their currencies plunged. Interest rates soared. Inflows of foreign capital stopped. Some found themselves turning to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for help.

In fact, the impact of the 2008 crisis split Central and Eastern Europe. The political leadership of the Baltic states toughed it out, accepting savage austerity to continue on their path toward euro membership. In Hungary, the governing parties were discredited, opening the door to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s illiberal regime.

But no country in the region was strategically more important, more fragile politically, or worse hit economically than Ukraine.

In a matter of weeks, Ukraine was dealt a devastating one-two punch by the war in Georgia and the financial crisis. This opened the door to the successful presidential candidacy of pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovych in 2010, and set in train desperate financial negotiations with the IMF, the EU, and Russia, culminating in the crisis of 2013. Given current talk of trade wars, it bears recalling that it was an argument over Ukraine’s association agreement with the EU that led to Yanukovych’s overthrow and an undeclared war with Russia.

Back in 1989, the end of the Cold War seemed to suggest that market-driven economic growth was an irrepressible force that gave the edge to the U.S.-led West. It was a small step from there to assuming that extending capitalism to the post-Soviet world would continue to shift the balance of power in the West’s direction.

The events of August and September 2008 taught two painful and deeply disconcerting lessons. First, capitalism is prone to disasters. Second, global growth did not necessarily strengthen the unipolar order. Truly comprehensive global growth breeds multipolarity, which, in the absence of an overarching diplomatic and geopolitical settlement, is a recipe for conflict.

Ten years later, the West is still struggling to come to terms with these disconcerting realizations. Today all eyes are on Asia, the rise of China, and its growing influence across Eurasia, Africa, and Latin America. But Putin’s Russia continues to be a spoiler.

So we should not forget the Georgian crisis of August 2008, when it first became obvious how dangerous the new global economic dispensation might become.

…attack police division, burn area commander’s car

  • Policeman, detained suspects die in attack

A policeman and about 11 others were shot dead while several others sustained gunshot injuries yesterday when armed robbers invaded Igarra town, the headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. The robbers unleashed terror in the town as they attempted to rob two commercial banks – Unity Bank and Keystone Bank.

The evening attack sent hordes of residents scampering for safety. Also killed were two detained suspects at the Divisional Police Station, who were arrested yesterday morning for minor offences. One of the dead detained suspects was said to have been arrested by the police for incomplete vehicle particulars. At press time, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, said information about the attack was still sketchy, but promised to release more details later. It was learnt that the gunmen swooped on the police station, which is about 1.2 kilometres from the banks, apparently to demobilise the policemen.

They also burnt the official vehicle of the newlyposted Area Commander. Three other persons near the police station were also killed. At least four other persons were killed within the premises of the two banks. It was learnt that the robbers could not gain access to the vaults of the banks. An indigene of the community, Ofei Obende, said residents mobilised themselves and tried to resist the robbers, but they were overpowered by the invaders’ firepower. He said that policemen attached to the banks had engaged the bandits in exchange of gunfire, which was responsible for the death of the three unidentified bodies. Palace Secretary to the Otaru of Igarra, the paramount ruler of the community, Elder Folorunsho Dania, confirmed the incident yesterday on the phone. He said: “This is a serious case. Armed robbers have besieged Igarra. So many lives were lost; 10 bodies have been counted.

The police station was set ablaze, while the Area Commander’s new car was torched. Also, close to the police station, three people were killed. In the banks – Keystone Bank and Unity Bank – many persons were killed. In all, 10 lives have gone.

“They could not access the strong rooms of the banks. The people that were killed in the bank were outside the bank premises. Four persons were killed on the bank premises. A policeman was killed in the police station. Also, a stone throw from the police station, three persons were killed. Igarra is in a war scene; I am right at the police station.”

Six persons were killed in a similar raid in November 2015 when robbers invaded the community. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Navy has arrested four suspected members of a notorious cult group, Debam, said to have been robbing sea travellers of their valuables. Cdr. Ikenna Okoloagu, the Base Operation Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder (NNS), Port Harcourt, paraded the four suspected cultists to newsmen on yesterday. He said the suspects were arrested by a naval patrol team deployed to end killings and other criminal activities in its host community of Rumuolumeni. “This decision to heighten our security patrol follows the recent reported spate of killings in Rumuolumeni community and other forms of criminality in the state.

“The patrol team was tasked with the responsibility to ensure a safe, secure and peaceful atmosphere within the state. “So, in the course of the patrols, on August 8, about 0845 hours, the base patrol element arrested four suspected sea robbers and members of the dreaded Debam cult group,” he said. The officer said that the suspects were apprehended at their hideout at Iwofe waterfront with a locally made pistol and four live cartridges found in their possession. “Additionally, controlled and banned substances such as cannabis (Indian hemp) and tramadol were found in their possession.

“The suspects were immediately brought in for questioning and they later confessed to being members of the Debam cult group,” he said. Okoloagu said the hand over to the police was done in line with the Harmonised Standard Operating Procedures that spelled out roles for security agencies in combating illegalities in the oil and gas sector. One of the suspects, who admitted to the crime and pleaded for leniency, said that he was recruited into Debam cult by a friend when he was 19 years old. “I joined the group when I was in my Senior Secondary Three level at Community Secondary School, Rumuolumeni, in 2015.

“Immediately I joined Debam, I started saving money and later bought the gun (locally made pistol) for N15,000 for my protection. “The gun is mine, but I have not shot or killed anybody with it,” the 22-year-old said. Lekum claimed they worked for an unnamed chairman of the National Union of Iwofe who directed them to collect levies from those engaging in illegal oil bunkering in the area. Also, a Daura Road Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna, Kaduna State, on Thursday ordered the remand of three men for alleged armed robbery.

The defendants – Rabiu Abdullahi, Ibrahim Dahiru and Anas Mohammed – are standing trial on a twocount charge of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery. The prosecutor, Insp. Akinga Akila, had told the court that the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

Akila said that on July 6, at 2p.m., the defendants robbed some passengers of their property on Ishaku Road, Ungwan Rimi in Kaduna, when they boarded a tricycle. The prosecutor said that the passengers were robbed of their phones and wallets, containing a school’s identity card and voter’s card, before the defendants were caught. He said that the defendants confessed to committing the crime during police investigation, adding that the offences contravened Sections 59 and 283 of the Penal Code. Magistrate Abdulkadir Musa declined to take the plea of the defendants because the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter. Musa ordered the police to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice and adjourned the case until September 5.
