Voice of America: Baseball’s Bill Buckner, Known for Infamous Fielding Error, Dies at 69

Major League baseball star Bill Buckner, whose excellence as a batter and in the field will forever be overshadowed by one of the game’s most infamous errors, has died.

Buckner was 69 and had been suffering from a form of dementia.

Buckner joined the major leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1969. In his 22 year-long playing career, Buckner won a National League batting title, was named to the 1981 All-Star team, and racked up 2,715 hits playing for the Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, Angels, and Royals.

But it was one play in one game for which Buckner will always be remembered.

It was Game 6 of the 1986 World Series between Buckner’s Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets.

With the score tied in extra innings, the Mets’ Mookie Wilson hit a weak ground ball to first base that went straight through Buckner’s legs, allowing the winning run to score from third base. The Mets won Game 7 the next night and the World Series.

No single player can be responsible for an entire team’s failure to win — and there was no guarantee the Red Sox would have won the game and become world champions if Buckner had made the easy play.

But Buckner became the target of scorn from the Boston press and Red Sox fans all over the country.

When the Red Sox invited Buckner to throw out the first pitch at a 2008 games, forgiving fans gave him a two minute-long standing ovation. Buckner said the moment was “about as emotional as it could get.”

Buckner was a minor league hitting coach and also owned property and car dealerships in Idaho after retiring as a player in 1990.

The National Weather Service is warning that the severe weather that has ravaged several states in the central U.S. since last week is not done.

NWS officials say unsettled conditions will bring heavy rains, severe thunderstorms and flooding from the Texas Panhandle to west-central Kansas. The threat will also stretch into Nebraska, Iowa, northern Illinois and central Indiana.

Over the holiday weekend, a deadly tornado ripped through El Reno, Oklahoma, killing two people. Twisters were also reported in New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas and Texas.

Since last week, severe weather has killed people in several states, including Missouri and Iowa. A 4-year-old boy was killed in Indiana.

As the stormy weather plagued the central U.S., several cities in the South have seen record-shattering high temperatures.

Over the weekend, Augusta, Georgia, tied a 141-year-old record high, as the temperature soared to 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Savannah, Georgia, tied the record for the earliest occurrence of triple-digit heat in the city, and Charleston, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina, reached 100 for the first time ever in May.

Meteorologists predict the scorching trend will continue, and high temperature records will be set in cities from Louisiana to Virginia.

By contrast, instead of sunshine and warmth, California got hit by a rare late May snowstorm, bringing record low temperatures. In the mountains of northern and southern California, surprise snowfalls have extended the ski season. Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort announced plans to to stay open into August.

Window on Eurasia — New Series: Ukrainian Default Kolomoysky Urges Would Cost Kyiv Western Support and Force It into Moscow’s Embrace, Bielieskov Says

Paul Goble
Staunton, May 27 – Ukrainian oligarch Igor Kolomoysky is urging that Ukraine default on its foreign debt as a way to kick start its economy, but such a step, Mykola Bielieskov says, would cost Kyiv the support it enjoys in the West and almost certainly force it to accept Moscow’s conditions.
In a comment for the Gordon news agency, the deputy director of the Kyiv Institute of World Politics argues default might benefit Kolomoysky but would be a disaster for Ukraine (gordonua.com/blogs/nikolay-beleskov/v-sluchae-defolta-my-possorimsya-s-zapadnymi-partnerami-togda-vozrastet-veroyatnost-chto-pridetsya-dogovarivatsya-s-rf-na-rossiyskih-usloviyah-995157.html).
Default would give Kolomoysky a better chance to get more than two billion US dollars from the IMF, but while he might benefit, Ukraine would not, Bielieskov says. “Debt in the West is something holy,” and any failure to pay what one owes as in the case of default would lead to a break with the country’s Western partners.
That would almost certainly force Ukraine to turn to Moscow and make greater concessions to the Russians than would otherwise be the case, and it would quite likely lead to an economic crisis in Ukraine. Those who point to cases when default led to positive outcomes forget that the positive outcomes came not so much because of default but from other causes.
Ukraine cannot count on them, Bielieskov says; and so it should not be misled by those who would profit for themselves at the expense of Ukraine and weaken the country which continues to be under attack from the Russian Federation. Both economics and politics thus dictates that default be rejected.

Paul Goble
Staunton, May 27 – The continuing impact of Moscow on the post-Soviet states is widely recognized, but cases where figures indicating this are so clear and stark are seldom more stark than in the case of legislation on how the governments of some of those countries should conduct counter-terrorist operations.
According to American investigator Eduard Lemon, 79 percent of the laws Kyrgyzstan has adopted in this area are copied word for word from Russian ones, and 56 percent of those Tajikistan has adopted are the same, while figures for the neighboring Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are only four to five percent copied form Russian “originals.”
Lemon, who has been a scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center, recently posted these figures on his Twitter account where they have attracted enormous attention in Central Asia (24.kg/obschestvo/116968_79protsentov_kyirgyizskih_zakonov_oterrorizme_iekstremizme_spisanyi_srossiyskih/).
On the one hand, there is obviously nothing wrong with legislatures in one country copying language from laws adopted in others, especially when the latter have more resources to develop such legislation. But on the other, the differences between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, on the one hand, and Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, on the other, highlight something disturbing.
Clearly, just as in Soviet times when they were union republics, some of the post-Soviet states still feel inclined to follow Moscow’s lead in all things while others are committed to charting their own course including in the language of laws on critical issues, none more so that counter-terrorism.
