A photo collage of incumbent President Joko Widodo and presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, from their respective Instagram accounts. Both of the presidential candidates used Instagram to show their mass support.

On 17 April 2019, 193 million Indonesian citizens simultaneously cast their vote for new leaders at more than 800,000 polling stations spread across the archipelago. According to the Australian think-tank, Lowy Institute, this gives Indonesia the unique distinction of holding the largest single-day elections in a democratic country.

On 21 May 2019, the General Election Commission (KPU) announced that incumbent president Joko Widodo (otherwise known as Jokowi) had won another term. His opponent, Prabowo Subianto, has rejected these results and hurled accusations of systemic cheating at the KPU. In the wake of these dramatic election results, Global Voices delves deeper into some of the other unique events that occurred during this year’s election cycle.

White: The color of both candidates and an anti-voting protest

No ink finger, was the icon of abstention this year. Image courtesy of Facebook page Saya Golput. Used with the permission of the owner.

In this election cycle, the color white took on new meaning for voters across the political spectrum. For Jokowi followers, a plain white shirt — which has come to typify Jokowi’s style — was the uniform of choice for his supporters. According to some, the word ‘white’ is one of the most frequent words pronounced by Jokowi’s stronghold.

On the opposition’s side, supporters of Prabowo Subianto from The Islamic Forum (FUI) and the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), two fundamentalist Muslim groups, urged their sympathizers to also wear white clothing on Election day. Conservative Muslim men from these organizations often wear long white shirts, and the clothing has become synonymous with their group.

The color white can also be seen in the symbol of a white hand that represents ‘no ink’. In Indonesia, ink is applied to a voter’s finger once they have cast their vote. This ink is very difficult to wash off and thus helps prevent double voting. The slogan behind this is, ‘Golput’, which is short for ‘golongan putih’ (white group).

In 2014, 30.14 percent of the total registered voters abstained from voting. During this election cycle, the Golput campaign was at the center of debate as different religious factions spoke out against abstention. Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), Indonesia’s top Muslim clerical body, forbade abstention. In addition, notable Catholic priest Romo Franz Magnis wrote an impassioned opinion article denouncing abstentions.

However, Indonesian political and military researcher Made Supriatma said that abstention in the election is a political choice:

In contrast to von Magnis who indicted this as immoral, I actually see that this option is morally accountable.

Von Magnis called those who decided to abstain fools, parasites, and mentally unstable.

But is it true that abstention is an immoral action? First of all, I think we need to straighten out what’s meant by “golput”. There is a lot of confusion with this term. Many people comprehend abstention merely as abstaining (non-voting behavior). We need to underline that this is an action. Not an attitude. Because it is simply an action, then the cause of non-voting behavior is diverse. Mostly it is done not as an attitude, not as a political statement.

I’ve pointed out that a lot of people choose abstention out of serious consideration. This [action] is not taken blindly. In my opinion, blindly supporting one candidate and participate in shredding the social life in this country is a form of mental instability. Isn’t that what has happened with the ardent supporters of both presidential candidates?

Deaths at the polling stations

One of the more astonishing incidents that happened during the 2019 election cycle, was the news that more than a thousand election workers fell ill and nearly 300 died due to fatigue-related causes

Our biggest condolences to Indonesian Democracy Heroes #IndonesiaElectionHeroes Thank you for your dedication and service for the establishment of Indonesian democracy #KPUserved

_ KPU RI (@KPU_ID) April 25, 2019

There is an ongoing debate about whether or not the cause of these deaths is a result of the immense mental pressure or the intense workload demanded of the polling station workers.

President Joko Widodo wrote his condolences on his Facebook account:

Beyond the success of democracy celebration, we have heard a sad news about the death of a number of KPPS workers and police officers due to fatigue and other causes.

I, on behalf of myself, the government, and the state, express deep condolences to the families left behind. These KPPS workers and police officers are warriors of democracy who die in the line of duty.

May Allah accept all their good deeds, become a blessing for Indonesia, and hopefully the families left behind are given fortitude.

Will either candidate be able to overcome the serious issues plaguing Indonesia?

In general, the 2019 election cycle was a success for the oldest political parties. Barely seen in the voter’s choices were the new Solidarity Indonesian Party (PSI) which targets the millennial generation, the Berkarya Party chaired by Tommy Suharto (son of former Indonesia president and strongman Suharto), and the Indonesian Unity Party (Perindo) founded by a tycoon close to Donald Trump.

This election season saw (and continues to see) a lot of campaign drama; however, what was lacking on the campaign trail were agendas from both candidates that addressed environmental problems, women’s and children’s rights, bureaucracy reformation, the potential return of TNI’s dual function, and other issues.

Without a clear agenda, the candidates and politicians involved in the public administration will struggle to overcome sectarian groups, corrupt bureaucrats, and impunity for human rights violations.

Voice of America: ‘Ramy’ Show Depicts Life of Arab American Muslims

If there is one thing highlighted by Ramy, a Hulu show about an Arab American Muslim millennial, it is that there are generational differences between the more traditional Arab Muslims who immigrated to America and those who were born and grew up here.

“I was the first generation trying to marry the two worlds and see how people from my culture, who see this comedy, react to my interpretation of being an American Muslim and my dilemmas as a millennial,” said comedian Ramy Youssef, who wrote and stars in the new comedy that is roughly based on his life.

The comedian describes his show as funny, darkly satirical and down to earth, aiming to dispel stereotypes about Muslims in America.

Ramy is a 10-episode series that follows a young Arab American Muslim as he tries to define his moral compass while juggling family relationships, romance and job security — or the lack thereof.

In the show, Ramy’s parents are dedicated Muslim immigrants from Egypt. Set in their traditional ways, they often chide Ramy and his sister for their liberated ideas and secular way of life. But, Ramy shows that his parents’ immigrant sensibilities run deep in him.

The show starts with the main character questioning his parents’ old ways and evolves with him embracing Arab Muslim traditions that define him as an Arab American.

Youssef said he wanted to make his Arab Muslim immigrant characters relevant to American viewers regardless of culture, age or religion. “It’s been kind of overwhelming, the amount of people who have said, ‘Oh, man, this is so much like me’ or ‘This is so similar to what I went through,’ ” he said.

In an America where immigration right now is a hot-button issue, Youssef said he wanted to focus on an Arab Muslim family and show the real problems they have and show their humanity. His goal, he said, is to defy stereotypes about Arab Muslims in a funny but poignant way.

Ramadan

The holy month of Ramadan is featured in the series, where the main character, like his family, fasts from sunrise to sunset. As he is trying to find inner purification, he grapples with the reality that the rules of Ramadan run deeper than fasting.

At the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center, a mosque in northern Virginia, many Muslims who come to pray echo the TV character’s thoughts and experiences.

“We live in a very materialistic, capitalistic society,” said Saif Rahman, of the center. “And trying to mesh your faith understanding of helping one another, of being at your neighbor’s aid, and just trying to live a spiritual life, it’s become somewhat difficult in a life that’s motivated by social media and material and the rat race of jobs and work and everything like that.”

For 16-year-old Maroa, a first-generation American of Arab descent, fasting is a way of purification.

“I think fasting has more to do with your mindset. If you are fasting because you have to, it’s way harder. But if you are fasting because you know why, you have a more optimistic perspective of it and it’s really, better and way easier. And the more you fast, the easier it gets,” Maroa said.

For young Arab American Muslim women, like Fatima, a high school sophomore, practicing the faith is part of their identity.

“It is difficult sometimes,” she said. “I have to dress modest and people might look at me and tell me that it’s kind of hot outside. I don’t take that personally because I’m used to it. So, I would say, that’s really challenging, growing up and not looking like the other normal girls.”

Defying stereotypes

Youssef said his comedy aims to bring up uncomfortable topics, such as the increasing mistrust of immigrants in America and particularly Arab Muslim immigrants, who may be viewed as potential terrorists. The comedian said practicing Islam is a personal choice and part of his American identity.

Rahman, of the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center, echoed that sentiment.

“I’m actually getting tired of having to apologize for being Muslim, because there is no reason to,” he said. “I’m an American, I’m a Muslim and there are no challenges, I feel, or the intersectionality of my religion as well as my Americanism don’t contradict one another.”

This article originated in VOA’s Persian Service. Cindy Saine contributed from the State Department.

The United States has reacted with concern to reports that a recently discovered pro-Iran social media network that deceptively targeted Americans is more sophisticated than a similar network identified last year.

In a report published Tuesday, California-based cybersecurity company FireEye said it recently uncovered a network of English-language social media accounts that engaged in “inauthentic behavior and misrepresentation” in support of “Iranian political interests.” It said it made the determination about the network’s support of Iranian political interests with “low confidence.”

FireEye’s report said some of the network’s users adopted fake social media personas to pose as American journalists and activists espousing progressive and conservative political stances, while others “impersonated real American individuals, including a handful of Republican political candidates that ran for House of Representatives seats in 2018.”

It said the account owners used the fake and impersonated personas to persuade U.S. and Israeli media outlets to publish news commentaries, lobby journalists to cover specific topics, and conduct audio and video interviews with U.S. and Britain-based individuals.

More sophisticated operation

In comments to The Washington Post published Wednesday, FireEye senior manager Lee Foster said the network’s theft of real-world identities and attempts to engage with specific, highly influential individuals online represented a “more sophisticated” operation than what it called an “Iranian influence campaign” that it uncovered in August 2018.

It said the prior campaign involved inauthentic news sites and social media accounts that promoted pro-Iran political narratives and appeared to originate within Iran.

U.S. social media giants Facebook and Twitter responded to FireEye’s disclosure of the more sophisticated pro-Iran network by issuing statements saying they had suspended the network’s accounts, which they said originated in Iran. They did not identify the users of those accounts.

Responding to emailed questions from VOA Persian on Thursday, a State Department spokesperson said Washington is “deeply concerned” with the reports of “coordinated inauthentic behavior” that originated in Iran. “We have no further comment as to who was behind the accounts,” the spokesperson wrote.

Facebook said it removed 51 personal accounts, 36 pages, seven groups and three Instagram accounts involved in the network Tuesday, after investigating “coordinated inauthentic behavior” based on a tip shared by FireEye.

FireEye criticized

A Twitter spokesperson told U.S. media that it removed 2,800 accounts that were part of the newly identified network in early May. But Twitter said its investigation into the accounts was ongoing and criticized FireEye for not sharing its findings with the company before publishing them.

It said FireEye’s behavior was “outside standard, responsible industry norms” and “harms the credibility of the security research community, whose insights we support and appreciate.”

A FireEye spokesperson declined to comment on Twitter’s criticisms when contacted by VOA Persian on Wednesday.

In separate remarks to NBC News, Foster, who leads FireEye’s intelligence team, said the newly uncovered pro-Iran social media network shows that “actors who engage in this type of influence activity leverage all manner of different tactics and techniques that stretch across a wide variety of media and platforms.” American society must figure out a way to effectively tackle the issue, he added.

The FireEye spokesperson contacted by VOA Persian also declined to say what more the U.S. government and social media companies should do in response to its latest report, saying that was outside the scope of its findings.
