Marble Arch.

Организаторы протестов заверили, что пропускают велосипедистов и машины экстренных служб.

Voice of America: Christians Await Joy of Easter Morning

Many Christians observed one of the most important times of their religious year with a vigil Saturday night before Sunday’s celebration of Easter, when the faithful believe Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

On the night of Holy Saturday, Pope Francis celebrates an Easter vigil at Saint Peter’s Basilica, ahead of Easter Sunday Mass in the square. At the end of Mass, the pope will give his traditional blessing to the city and to the world.

Elsewhere, many worshippers participate in sunrise services to greet the first light of Easter Sunday. The day is marked by religious services, family dinners, treats for children and, in some cases, new clothes to celebrate the coming of spring.

On Friday, many Christian pilgrims participated in a ritual known as the Stations of the Cross. In Jerusalem, thousands of worshippers marched through the ancient, narrow cobblestone alleyways of the Old City, retracing what they believe is the route Jesus Christ took to his crucifixion.

Carrying crosses

Some of the faithful observed Good Friday by carrying large, wooden crosses on their shoulders. Others sang hymns and read Scriptures during the traditional procession, retracing the purported path of Jesus to the 14 Stations of the Cross. The route leads to Calvary, or Golgotha, also referred to as the Place of the Skull, where the Bible says Jesus died.

Pilgrims came to Israel from all over the world to celebrate one of Christianity’s most sacred days, including Frank Caldwell from the U.S. state of Minnesota. “I think it’s always a feeling of walking in the footsteps of Jesus, and it’s a very religious feeling and very good feeling to be here,” he said.

The procession culminated at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where many Christians believe Jesus was buried before his resurrection, which is observed Easter Sunday.

Israeli police and soldiers armed with assault rifles guarded the route, but the atmosphere was calm.

Good Friday coincided with the biblical Jewish holiday of Passover this year, and Israelis also flocked to Jerusalem to celebrate. Among them was Eddie Stern, who said “Passover is … an understanding of perhaps why Israel exists and the history of the Jewish people coming to Israel.”

Adding to the religious and cultural mix were Palestinian Muslims who attended Friday prayers at the Mosque of al-Aqsa, the third-holiest place in Islam.

Nun’s meditations

Pope Francis marked Good Friday with the same ritual in Rome, leading thousands of Christians in the Stations of the Cross. This year, the pope asked an 80-year-old nun, Sister Eugenia Bonetti, who has devoted her life to rescuing victims of sex trafficking, to write the meditations for the 14 stops along the way.

Francis has called forcing women into prostitution “a crime against humanity” and has urged Catholics “to open their eyes” to victims. The aim of Sister Bonetti’s meditations was to show the way in which Christ still suffers today.

Sister Bonetti’s meditations also included reminders of other sufferers, whom she dubbed “today’s newly crucified” — the homeless, the jobless, the hopeless, and the immigrants who are forced to live in poverty or danger on the margins of society.

She said the faithful should remember “all those who even now are enduring crucifixion as victims of our narrowmindedness, our institutions and our laws, our blindness and selfishness, but especially our indifference and hardness of heart.”

Voice of America: Pakistan-funded Afghan Hospital Begins Operations

Afghanistan and Pakistan have jointly inaugurated a 200-bed, state-of-the-art hospital in Kabul, one of three major health care facilities being built and funded by Islamabad as its contribution to reconstruction efforts in the war-ravaged neighboring country.

Named after the founder of Pakistan, the Muhammad Ali Jinnah Hospital took 12 years to finish at a cost of more than $24 million. Officials in both countries cited deteriorating Afghan security, continued mutual political acrimony and institutional as well as bureaucratic inefficiencies for the delay in the completion of the second-largest hospital in Afghanistan.

Vice President Mohammad Sarwar Danish, Afghan Health Minister Ferozuddin Feroz, and a visiting senior-level Pakistani delegation headed by Cabinet Minister Ali Muhammad Khan attended the inaugural ceremony Saturday where Pakistan officially handed over the multispecialty facility to the Kabul government.

“It opens a new chapter in the friendship of the two countries. … This is the second-largest hospital [in Afghanistan] built with your support that will serve the needy,” Feroz told the gathering. He added that a second Pakistan-funded, 100-bed hospital costing $19 million and a major kidney center were near completion and would be inaugurated soon in the eastern Afghan cities of Logar and Jalalabad, respectively.

Polio fight

The Afghan minister also emphasized the need for the two countries to enhance cooperation in fighting the wild polio virus. The United Nations says Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries in the world where the disease is still crippling children.

Visiting Minister Khan noted in his speech that Pakistan has pledged an overall $1 billion in development assistance to Kabul “in pursuance of Pakistan’s policy objective of deepening and broadening people-to-people connections between the two countries.” He said the newly built hospital would “contribute immensely” to improving the Afghan health sector, noting the completion of three hospitals and 14 mobile medical units would conclude Pakistan’s assistance to Afghanistan in the health sector.

Pakistani officials say they are also working to enhance capacity and manpower at their diplomatic missions and major border crossings with Afghanistan to speed up issuing visas and make it faster to enter the country to help Afghans seeking medical treatment in Pakistani hospitals.

Bilateral relations remain fragile and tense over Afghan allegations that Islamabad covertly supports and shelters leaders of the Taliban insurgency, while Pakistan officials allege anti-state militants are using volatile border areas in the neighboring country to plot terrorist attacks inside Pakistan.

U.S.-Taliban talks

Pakistan takes credit for arranging an ongoing direct dialogue between the Taliban and the United States to help end the 18-year-old war in Afghanistan. The months-long U.S.-Taliban talks are the first serious engagement between the two adversaries, raising expectations it could lead to an intra-Afghan peace dialogue to end years of hostilities.

But Afghans remain skeptical about Islamabad’s intentions and insist the neighboring country is trying to help the Taliban regain power in Kabul to continue its alleged meddling in Afghanistan’s internal affairs.

Pakistan, which still hosts about 3 million Afghan refugees, rejects the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.

The two countries share a 2,600-kilometer border, and tens of thousands of people move daily in both directions. Islamabad says a robust fence being built on the traditionally porous Afghan border is expected to be completed by end of this year and that it would help deter illegal cross-border movements and address mutual security concerns.

Global Voices: ‘Culture of killing and impunity’: Coffee shop shooting in the Philippines leaves two dead

Passersby offer flowers and prayers at the storefront of the coffee shop where two employees were killed in a midnight shooting incident. Photo by The Good Cup Coffee used with permission.

In the late hours of April 11th, 2019, a lone gunman entered into The Good Cup Coffee Company in Cebu City — killing two people and critically injuring two more. As friends and family mourn the victims of the attack, many are blaming President Duterte’s government for creating an atmosphere that normalizes violence and killings.

It was an otherwise regular night in an area of Cebu City known for its young professionals and college students. 29-year-old co-manager and barista John Michael Hermoso, 21-year-old student Kis Tryvl Ramos, and employees Sherwin Dean Rivera and Jerome Amada were closing shop shortly before midnight when a lone gunman entered and began shooting.

The gunman quickly escaped on a motorcycle that was waiting for him outside. John Michael was killed immediately while Kis was declared dead on arrival at the Velez Hospital. Sherwin and Jerome were left in critical condition.

The police continue to “look at all possible angles” to establish the motives behind the shooting.

Normalization of killings

Some critical voices, like UP Cebu’s Prof. Henry Francis B. Espiritu, hold the Duterte government primarily responsible for the spike in killings in Cebu and other parts of the Philippines:

We hold the statements and pronouncements of this tyrannical regime and the politics of death pursued by this present regime responsible for making possible the bloodshed, murderous crimes, and the normalization of killing in our benighted country.

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP), of which Kis was a member as a student journalist, also links this to the reigning culture of killings and impunity under Duterte:

The full details remain unclear, but what does remain clear is that this culture of killing and impunity has emboldened murderers to openly boast of their weapons and shoot people. The rotten system of society that allows this to occur has never been remedied.

While President Rodrigo Duterte won on an anti-crime platform which promised to secure peace and order, many now lament how the taking of lives have become commonplace in Cebu and the rest of the country.

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) listed Central Visayas (which includes Cebu City as the regional capital) as having the fourth highest number of killings related to Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.

In memoriam

Set to graduate at the University of the Philippines-Cebu (UP-Cebu) with an undergraduate degree in psychology this June 2019, Kis was a student leader and student writer for the campus paper Tug-ani.

John Michael, one of the coffee shop’s managing partners, was supposed to take part in an international barista competition after winning the Philippine Brewer’s Cup last March 2019.

UP Cebu students, faculty, and academic employees held a candle lighting a day after the incident and a fundraising campaign has been initiated for the families of the victims.

The Good Cup Coffee Company’s statement on the shooting incident called for justice and prayers for the victims and has been widely shared on social media. The shop is temporarily closed while streamers in memory of Kis and John Michael has been put up at the shop’s storefront where passersby offer flowers and prayers.

Paying homage to the life of John Michael Hermoso, Champion 2019 of the Brewers Cup Champion Philippines

I remember Kis was one of those I shared sentiments with while we were sleeplessly covering the General Assembly of Student Councils in Iloilo in 2018. Things happen too fast. What happened to her and her companions is unacceptable! Justice for Kis Ramos! Justice for the workers of The Good Coffee Company!

One of Kis’ professors at UP Cebu, Dr. Phoebe Zoe Maria Sanchez, had this to share about her:

Our Kis Tryvl Ramos was raised well. Kis was advanced in thinking and her dedication to learning was not only for herself but also had as its purview the wider society. She was not like others who were ignorant of their societal embeddedness despite their high professions. Time spent with Kis in our classes in history, sociology, and anthropology were truly productive.
